Courts and tribunals

A guide to the courts and tribunals that operate in Victoria and the legal issues they deal with.

The role of courts and tribunals is to interpret and apply the law. Because federal and Victorian laws apply in Victoria, federal and Victorian courts and tribunals operate in Victoria.

Which court or tribunal hears a case depends on the court’s or tribunal’s jurisdiction. Jurisdiction is the area of law or monetary limit that determines which cases can be heard by a court or tribunal. The most serious cases will be heard in the superior, or higher, courts. More general cases are heard in the lower courts.

The highest court in Australia is the High Court of Australia.
