Discussion Panel: a sentencing guidelines council for Victoria?

Do you want to have a say on sentencing in Victoria? The Victorian State Government announced last May that it would create a sentencing guidelines council in Victoria. In the United Kingdom similar advisory bodies conduct research, consult with the community and develop sentencing guidelines to guide how courts sentence.

The Attorney-General asked the Sentencing Advisory Council to consult with courts, victims groups, legal stakeholders and the community, and to provide advice on the appropriate features of the new Victorian sentencing guidelines council.

The Sentencing Advisory Council has now released an issues paper and is inviting you to have your say in an online survey on the creation of a sentencing guidelines council in Victoria.

You are also invited to join the conversation at a discussion panel with Sentencing Advisory Council Chair Emeritus Professor Arie Freiberg in conversation with two international experts on the topic.

Panelists:

Lord Justice Colman Treacy – Chair of the Sentencing Council for England and Wales

Professor Julian Roberts – Professor of Criminology, Faculty of Law, University of Oxford (and member of the Sentencing Council for England and Wales).
